Large Plush Animals Make Wonderful Gifts

January 18th, 2010

One of the must have toys a child can receive is a stuffed animal as a gift and often they are kept way after a child has grown up. A stuffed animal is a great idea, because it is something they can curl up with at night, a great companion, they are always there if your child is feeling lonely, or sad, or hearing “things that go bump in the night” and they keep even the deepest secrets safe.

Many people think of Teddy Bears when it comes to stuffed toys, but there are so many different kinds of other animals as well, from all parts of the world. They can be a wonderful teaching tool for your child, as you
can find all kinds of pictures and information about any animal.

Of course there is the ever favorite classic Teddy, but there are also many other different bears to choose from. You have black bears, and brown bears, as well as the popular white polar bear. These come in sizes up to fifty inches in some cases, although they are mostly available in 12″-28″. It doesn’t stop there however, and you can find many others. There are polar bears, some alone, some with cubs, and this is like getting two animals for the price of one. Some come with their cubs permanently attached, and others can be played with separately. There are also Pandas, and Koala bears offered as well.

You can choose from many other plush animals from all parts of the world. You can find lions, as well as tigers, and these are available in larger sizes, some even over 30″ in length. Other stuffed animals are available, including Giraffes, Elephants, and even Gorillas are not uncommon. Some are extra large and cuddly, up to 48″ and sometimes even more. You can find endangered species available, Emperor Penguins, chimpanzees, wolves, and lemurs, to name a few. While most are not extremely large, some are available in big sizes.

Buying large plush animals that are endangered, can be a great way to teach children that you care about our planet’s creatures. Many of these animals are now in very low numbers in the real world, and are close to extinction. Unfortunately, there are still people who poach these majestic animals, and as long as people are buying things like ivory tusks, and think that chimps or Koala Bears may make a good pet, there are going to be people who take them from their homes and families.

There are other large plush animals to choose, some you wouldn’t normally think of. There are large frogs, and these come in size range up to 28″. There are horses as well, including the classic painted horse, that we recognize being ridden by Native Americans in the Old West. You can also find your pet dogs in a plush animal as well, from Cocker Spaniels, Labradors, as well as many more.

With all the sizes and varieties to choose from, there many tips to help narrow your search down to a more manageable level. The first thing you need to keep in mind is the age of the person you are gifting to. Large plush animals are an excellent idea, but you need to choose carefully for very young child for safety reasons.

Things you want to check are the eyes and nose pieces for starters. Be sure that these are securely attached, and don’t have any rough edges. Where there are seams, make sure they are tight, and give them the tug test. Try to find your large plush animals that are filled with some other material than Styrofoam beads, because if something does happen, whether a tear, or a seam coming apart, that the insides don’t become a choking hazard.
You want to find a website that only sells quality animals, and the cheapest is not always the best. Check with the site about what materials are used, and if they are fire retardant. This will help you pick not only the best animal, but also one that is safe to give. There are now eco friendly stuffed animals available and these are a great choice.

For an excellent selection of high quality stuffed animals in all sizes, check out PuzzlesandPlush.com They have just added a new line of eco friendly stuffed animals and also carry hundreds of jigsaw puzzles for all ages. A great family store.Article Source:http://www.articlesbase.com/parenting-articles/large-plush-animals-make-wonderful-gifts-1735258.html

How to Change Your Child’s Behavior

January 17th, 2010

Did your grandmother ever tell you, “You get more flies with honey than with vinegar?” Well, she was a wise woman and she was right. When you use rewards to teach a child they remember the lesson longer and use it more often than they do when punishment is used. Why would that be? You (the parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, etc.) are the most important people in a child’s life. They will do anything to please you. When you show that you are happy with something a child has done, they will repeat it over and over again to seal their relationship with you. It’s how nature works. They crave and need your “honey,” your love. They will even do their homework to gain your love, if you sit with them and help them. You see, that is the key – they want you.

Scientists use something they call “successive approximations” to train animals in the lab. That just means that they take tiny little steps to-ward the goal they want and reward each step the animal takes in the right direction. So if you want a baby chick to go down the path to the right, you give him some corn if he even looks to the right; more corn if he moves to the right, more corn if he moves toward the path to the right; another reward for going part way down the path, etc. Do you get the picture?

Let’s take a situation with a child. A youth is not good at to cleaning his room. You start by showing him what you want him to do. Make it a game and make a big deal out of every sock that goes in the dresser. Say, “Yeah!” and “Great job!” Each time you help clean the room, you do less and let the child does more. After a few trials, the child should be cleaning the whole room without assistance. Gradually reduce the amount of cheering until there is one big, “Great Job!” at the end.

One way to use natural consequences is to have a child clean his room in time to have a favorite recreational activity. This way you teach the child about good choices at the same time. “You must be tired today. You are going so slowly in cleaning your room that I am sure (Favorite activity) will be over by the time you are done. But you did not really want to do that anyway. Maybe tomorrow.”
“No, you want your favorite activity. I guess you better find some energy somewhere to clean your room because at this rate, you will surely miss it. I’m so sorry, but it’s your choice. How are you going to get what you want?” You are teaching the child to reason as well.

Let’s look at punishment. It works the same way and is better because of its natural consequences. For example, a child breaks something when he is clowning around. He has been told not to horseplay (or whatever). You could show the youth how disappointed you are that he broke ____________. Help him reason out how it happened (he was clowning around.) Have him help clean it up and add another cleaning chore (natural consequence). Use problem solving with him to show how to prevent that from happening in the future and the consequences of clowning/horseplay.

Another example might be a child who is so rough with his recreational equipment that he breaks them often. They can all go on the shelf so he can think and talk to you about how to be more careful with his equipment. The next day, bring out one activity and tell him, “It is your choice. You can be careful that you do not break your ___________, so you can have another tomorrow or you can be careless and break your _________ so that it goes back on the shelf and you don’t get another one tomorrow. Bring recreational supplies out or put them away depending on his ability to take care of them. Always talk to him about what is going on. There may be other reasons why this might be happening. You could also use a reward schedule to help make better recreational habits.

Using a calendar as a behavior chart can be very effective when you want to build a daily behavior such as brushing your teeth. You can say to the child, “Every time you brush your teeth, you can put a star on the calendar for that day.” You have to help out by checking that it has been done and remembering stars. “When you have ____ (about a weeks worth) stars, we can go to the library to borrow a book (not everything has to cost money). Now, here’s the key to this little gem. You are building success. The first week, you use a number that you know he can achieve; maybe it’s just twice. Next week say, “Let’s see if you can brush your teeth four times this week.” Keep increasing until your child is brushing his teeth twice a day. Rewards can be things that you might have done anyhow, but now they take on special meaning and become bonuses that build good habits.

Suppose your child has a bad habit you want to break. All of us do things because there’s a reason behind it. It’s important to discover the reason that the child is engaging in a bad habit. Let’s say that your child is not doing her homework after school. The first thing to do is to find out why. Maybe no one is there to tell her to do homework before she plays. Is she having trouble with one of her subjects? Is she having trouble with a teacher or a bully at school? Is she having trouble with a friend? Does she want your attention? Talk to your child. Find out what is beneath the behavior that you see. Solve problems with your child. If she needs more time with you, help her with her homework. If she having trouble with a subject or someone, help her with that. Reward homework well done (use your calendar to record it) with a favorite TV show, a trip to the movies on the weekend, or a family pizza night.

In summary, whether you are teaching a child or a grown up, your rewards should outnumber your punishments by a ratio of four to one. This works for wives and husbands and partners, as well. Look beneath the behavior to see if there is something else brewing that needs attention. Above all, talk to your child, teach, and problem solve.

How to Keep Unsafe Toys from Your Child

January 16th, 2010

One of the things that kids love the most is toys. There are millions of toys in the world, and new kinds come into stores every few months. They are important to help your child grow up and develop properly, but they can become a hazard if not made properly. Many children are sent to the emergency room every year because of toy-related accidents.

When you buy toys, make sure that cloth toys are flame resistant or retardant. Any toys that are painted should be painted with lead-free paint. Any art materials should be nontoxic and labeled ASTM D-4236, meaning that they have been checked by the American Society for Testing and Materials. Toys that are old should be thrown away or kept away from young children. These battered toys can harm young ones if they break. All toys should be sturdy so that they do not break.

Make sure that the toys have no sharp edges or points which could puncture your child’s skin. Young children tend to put toys in their mouths and also near their eyes, so check all their toys for this hazard. Battery-powered toys are bad for little children since they could try to eat the batteries. Be certain the battery compartment is not easy for children to access. Also, if old batteries are not changed they could leak toxic fluids. Batteries should be checked or changed periodically. Old toys should be stored without batteries.

Loose strings and cords can be hazardous too, since the child can get tangled or even strangled with them. Any strings should be too short to wrap around a child’s neck. Toys with small parts are extremely dangerous for children under the age of three. These parts can come off and young children can choke on them. Very loud toys can be dangerous since they could damage your child’s hearing.

A lot of toys are recalled each year for being dangerous for young children, but sometimes some toys stay in stock at stores. Make sure that the toys you are buying have not been recalled. You can check on sites like Recalls-dot-gov to see what toys are recalled. Make sure to check this often, as the list is updated regularly.

Always make sure to read the recommended ages for toys, and make sure that your child is mature enough to play with the toy without hurting himself or herself. Toys that are shaped like food can be dangerous since children will think that it is real and try to eat it. Make sure that your child knows the difference between toys and real food if you get these types of toys.

With the toys that you have already, clean them regularly so that they do not get dirty and carry germs to your child. You can also remove dust mites from plushy toys by putting them in the freezer for 6 hours and vacuuming them afterward. Remember to store everything properly in labeled containers in a neat way. Check your child’s toys to see if they are broken and have become a hazard, and if they can’t be fixed, throw them away.

Lastly, make sure that the play area is safe for your child as well. Make sure there aren’t any breakable items nearby and that there is not anything that could fall and potentially harm your child. If the area is safe and the toys are safe, then your child will have less chances of getting hurt while playing.

How Water Safety Tips Can Save Lives

January 15th, 2010

Blake Collingsworth never wanted to be the person reminding people it can happen to them.  Water Safety and Early Childhood Education is so important for everybody to know.

That all it takes is one second, and your child can slip out of your sight.

“Everybody thinks they know, but they’ve got to remind themselves over and over,” he said. “It’s amazing, with kids, how fast it can happen.”

Collingsworth’s two-and-a-half year old son, Joshua, wandered outside Sunday evening during a family get-together at the Collingsworth home near Wilderness Ridge.

His family had barely had time to realize he had slipped away when they found him floating in the backyard pool.

Joshua was not breathing, and family members gave him CPR until an ambulance arrived to rush him to BryanLGH Medical Center West.

He was flown by medical helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Omaha, where he died Wednesday evening, surrounded by family.

Joshua was “the happiest, prettiest little boy I’ve ever seen in my life,” his father said.

He adored his older brother, Connor, who turns seven this month, and Connor was very protective of Joshua.

Josh wanted to do anything his brother did,” Collingsworth said. “If Connor jumped off a rock, Joshua would be climbing up that rock.”

Joshua was fortunate to have a large extended family with lots of cousins the same age. One set of grandparents live next door and the other pair live two blocks away.

Family had been over at the house swimming on Sunday, Collingsworth said. Everyone had just gotten out of the pool and gone inside to eat when they noticed Joshua wasn’t there.

Collingsworth, who was upstairs in his home office, heard his wife, Kathy, call to him to ask if he’d seen Joshua, he recalled.

Seconds later, “I heard her scream and all hell broke loose,” he said.

When the family first decided to put in a pool, Collingsworth didn’t spare any expense on safety, he said. He always made sure the pool was covered and the gate was shut when no one was swimming.

“I felt like we had taken every precaution we could take,” he said.

More people had been on their way over to swim, and Collingsworth, who was inside, didn’t realize everyone had gotten out of the pool, he said.

Joshua always wore a life preserver around the pool, and he was not likely to jump in or be a daredevil, his father said.

“He got too close and slipped in, is the only thing I can think of,” he said.

There are so many what-ifs, but that’s not important, Collingsworth said.

“It’s not a question of who didn’t shut the door …. there’s so many shoulda-coulda-wouldas,” he said. “When they say it only takes a minute, they’re not lying.”

It is the hope of Blake Collingsworth and the other nationwide supporters of the Joshua Collingsworth Memorial Foundation that Joshua’s death, though tragic, would help save other children’s lives.  Through Early Childhood Educational Materials about Water Safety, our mission and goal is to prevent EVERY infant drowning and show how so many of these deaths can be prevented.

With your help and cooperation, we will continue to educate and save lives around the world.  For more information on how you can help, please visit our website at www.joshuamemorial.org or www.joshtheotter.org Thank you so much for your time.

Crafts and Fun with Things Around the House

January 14th, 2010

Cannot find anything fun for your children to do today? There’s always something to make with the simplest stuff lying around your house. You just have to use your imagination to find out what and how to make things.

Empty soda pop cans may be used for several things; they aren’t just trash. Gather the cans and some glue and you are on your way to making a robot. All you need is two cans for each leg, four cans for the body, two cans for the arms, one can for the neck, and 2 more cans for the head. Clue them all together and make your robots come to life. Also, you can make some games out of empty pop cans. You could line them up and let your children throw balls at them to see who knocks the most down, or set them up like bowling pins.

With empty milk jugs, your children can make and decorate their very own piggy bank. Cut a hole big enough for every coin under the lip of the milk jug so they can slip their money in. Let them decorate it however they desire. If your child thinks a piggy bank is not a good enough idea, they could also make a planter. Cut the top off of the milk jug, fill it with soil, and let them plant seeds of their choice in them. Make sure they keep up with the plant and water it. They can watch their creation grow and enjoy it too!

Can kids really have more fun with the box than the toy? Do they really need to have the toys that come with them? Get a big empty box, draw wheels and headlights on it! You could cut holes in the bottom of the box for their legs and get a paper plate for the steering wheel. To keep the box up and off the floor punch holes in the front and back of the box. Tie one side of the string to the front of the box and the other to the back. Do this on both sides of the box and the strings become almost like suspenders for the car. If the basic drawings on the box aren’t good enough to the child let them design their own car. This could be fun for the whole family. With more than one of these cars they can have races, their own car shows, and anything else that comes to their imagination.

You and your children can put on a puppet show. All you need is a couple of old socks. Draw some faces on them and make them say what you want. You can get more elaborate and sew or glue on yarn hair, button eyes, or any other kinds of notions you can think of. Make the puppets come to life and hang an old sheet to create a background or stage. There are many ways to create crafts and games for kids with stuff around the house. Use your imagination and let your children explore the different ways to recycle “trash.”

Character Bedding and other stuff where to buy

January 13th, 2010

In a world where our kids choose how to spend our hard earned money we have to consider when something is value for money. In this article i’m talking about Licensed Character Products for the bedroom. Children are typically in the same bed from around 2 years old until 15 years old and so whatever purchase choices we make in terms of the bedding should be viewed as a long term use – 13 years in a childs life is a long time!

As an example of my point; we purchased a Disney Towel for what was then our 2 year old daughter, it was bright colourful and practical – most of all she loved it. Here we are 18 years later and that towel passes occasionally through the wash cycle – now that was real value for money. If only all gifts we bought for her lasted so long!

The market availability of character bedding and similar products has grown and is vast so clearly being market driven we parents have lead this market to its current position.

Whats available:

  • Bedding / Duvet Covers
  • Backpacks
  • Towels
  • Fleece Blankets
  • Rugs
  • Curtains
  • Lamps / Lighting
  • Umbrellas
  • Lunch Boxes
  • School Bags

Pretty much all of the above are available in the characters that we have all grown to know and love and they continue to evolve, so which are available:

  • Ben 10
  • Transformers
  • Betty Boop
  • Hello Kittty
  • Bob The Builder
  • GoGo
  • Fifi and The Flowertots
  • Peppa Pig and George
  • New Moon Twilight
  • Guinness
  • Elvis Presley
  • Power Rangers
  • Fireman Sam
  • Me To You
  • Princess
  • High School Musical
  • Hannah Montana
  • Icarly
  • Lazy Town

And the list goes on. One of the best internet shops I have found has virtually all of these items available Character Place or there sister shop

The point Im making is theres a lot to choose from – but is it value for money?

YES it is…….

Consider that a Single Bed size duvet cover with a matching pillowcase can start as low as £9.99 or a towel suitable for home, school or holiday use can be as little as £7.99 or an additional blanket / throw for a bed from £6.99 then they are value for money.

Most people I know would consider spending between £5 and £15 on a childs birthday or christmas present with them often buying a one-time-use toy (thats not value for money in my opinion!) better they buy something thats still fun but also practical and long lasting.

Of course the choice is yours.

I run High Street Character Shops and several internet sites along with Amazon and eBay shops my customers are from around the globe.

Positive Results From Breast Feeding Babies and Using Formula vs. Breast Milk Storage Bags

January 12th, 2010

When you have given birth, breast feeding is the most urgent thing you can do to protect your baby and help to market good health. Best of all, breast feeding is free. To help with an active way of living or when you cannot breast feed for any cause, breast milk storage bags are a superb option.

Along with saving you money on HMR (Human Milk Replacement), breast feeding can also help you to keep your medical bills down. Babies that are fed with formula get sicker more often and more seriously than babies that are breast fed They also have more ear infections, respiratory infections, and other problems.

This may be even more true if your folks have had a record of allergies. When a baby is breast fed, the antibodies pass on from the ma to the baby, helping to guard against sickness and allergies. As the child’s system matures, his body will start to make it’s own antibodies, and he is going to be more rigged to handle sensitivities of food.

Sucking on the breast will also help with the development or jaw alignment and the development of the cheekbone. For this very reason, there’s less of the necessity for costly orthodontic work when the kid gets older. If you are away, bottle feeding is fine with stored breast milk storage bags.

Unlike formula, breast milk is always ready, always available, convenient, and always the right temperature for feeding. Plus, it contains all of the vitamins and minerals your growing baby needs, saving you a lot of money.

Breast feeding also offers many benefits for the mom as well. The baby sucking at the breast will cause contractions right after birth, leading to less bleeding for the mom, and helping her uterus to it’s shape before pregnancy much faster.

Breast feeding will also burn energy, so a mom can lose pounds quicker than if she fed her baby with a bottle. Breast feeding will also make a special bond with The Mummy and the baby – which is one thing formula simply can’t do.

As you can see, there are lots of advantages of giving our kid breast milk when they’re new borns. The bond between ma and kid alone is worth breast feeding or simply storing milk in breast milk storage bags. If you’re trying to decide between formula and breast milk, this article should definitely help.

Important Facts Surrounding Breast Milk Storage and Breast Milk Storage Bags

January 11th, 2010

One of the hardest choices you’ll have to make : Bottle feeding or Breastfeeding? Notwithstanding all of the info available on the arguments, the ultimate choice is yours. What is best for some other person may not be suitable for you. Here is some aid to make your call. The strong case for breast feeding Most pediatricians advocate breast milk as the ideal food for a baby and indeed it’s all that she wishes for the 1st half a year. It is straightforward to digest. It contains unique illness fighting antibodies, an exclusive mix of nutrient elements, hormones and enzymes that plug expansion and development.

Breast milk stays at the right temperature, is available at all times and is safe and sterile too. Breastfeeding offers protection against several allergies and diseases. There is more physical contact with your baby while you breastfeed. Breastfeeding is beneficial for the mother as well.

It helps shrink your uterus to its normal size, burns calories and helps you lose weight, and is known to reduce your risk of breast, uterus and ovarian cancer. Exclusive breastfeeding until six months is an effective method of contraception too. And yes, breast milk is nature’s first choice for your baby. Breast feeding: The flip side Breastfeeding requires a great deal of patience and perseverance not to mention a great deal of time. If you want to go back to work, breastfeeding might not be practical.

A breastfeeding mummy has to avoid alcohol, smoking and limit caffeine consumption. She also has to look at what she eats till she’s breastfeeding. You can’t go on a diet while you are breastfeeding. Breastfeeding also boundaries the diversity of clothes you can wear. This may be a little upsetting particularly if you were waiting to dump those pregnancy pounds and get into those bikinis and tube tops.

Many recommend that those suffering from certain conditions or on particular medications should not breast feed. In favour of Bottle feeding Bottle feeding or formula feeding could be a substitute for breastfeeding, particularly for mas who can’t breast feed due to any reason. Commercially available child formulas are made under sterile conditions and make an attempt to reproduce human milk with complicated ingredients. Bottle feeding provides plenty of convenience and pliability. Both partners ( pa doesn’t feel left out ) and carers can feed baby, giving mom her desirable time outs.

Mothers don’t have to worry about what they eat or drink if they are not breastfeeding their baby. Bottle feeding Cons Bottles and nipples need to be washed and sterilized meticulously during the initial few months since they can transmit germs to baby. The feeds have to be maintained at the right temperature. Preparing formula for a howling baby thrice in the middle of the night can be demanding. Besides, formula-fed babies do not obtain the natural protection that breast milk bestows.

Bottle fed children have more gas, more tooth rot and more digestion issues and run a larger possibility of being fat later in life. Exclusive formula feeding can be dear too. Will a combo work for me? If you earnestly would like to breast feed but can’t commit sufficient time for it, there isn’t any need feel guilty. Where there’s a will there’s a way. You can take nursing breaks from work if possible.

Pumping breast milk and storing it for your baby is another choice. This “breast in a bottle” method supplies the best of two worlds. Otherwise, you can choose combo feeding, where you nurse your baby when you’re with him and he’s formula fed otherwise. Whatever the strategy you select, bottle feeding or breastfeeding, feeding your baby isn’t just about providing nourishment. It is a break for you and baby to nurture an emotional and physical bond.

Tips on handling a wayward child

January 10th, 2010

Parenting an adolescent is not simple. It takes creativity, willpower and tolerance! It is a difficult journey. While there is no magic spells that will make teens behave in a different manner, you can accomplish the similar extreme transformation by learning how to tackle your child and approach your adolescent in order to get the outcome you desire.

Here are some parenting tips:

1. Accept the adolescent the way they are: Accept your child and his/her rebelliousness, and prepare yourself to tolerate that reality. If the child is disobedient and defiant, it doesn’t mean you also have to behave in a similar manner. Move on with your life, be happy and keep a belief that in all likelihood, everything will be fine in few years time. It’s not going to be easy. As parents want to improve the child as soon as possible. Be enduring and positive. Just bear in mind that the majority of children who go off the profound end as teenagers eventually re-emerge as responsible, mature adults.

2. When the adolescent is off track, you need to take extra pain and effort to secure and support the bonds of affection and apprehension connecting you and your child. Parents must stop getting disappointed. They should stop lecturing the child all the time, stop fuming, grieving, being mournful and start giving. Parents should show their love and care through gestures. Hug your child, tell him/her of your love and show that you care. Smile at them, laugh with them even though you are crying from within or are angry. It is necessary to put up an act. However, the act should be a sincere one. All children love being loved and want loving parents. Your child may disappoint you, but being parents and mature you should always be there for them and never disappoint them.

3. Never protect your teenagers from the responsibility and penalty of their actions and deeds. Consequences are the supreme teachers in our lives. When we protect our teenagers against the consequences of their actions and deeds, we alter reality and hinder their healthy growth and development.  Hence the child will never learn how to tackle the consequences of his own actions.

Support the institutions of Society that scatter penalty. If your child attains a speeding ticket, the police are not to be blamed. If the child is caught shoplifting, the company security is not to be blamed. If he is caught in possession of tobacco, drugs or alcohol and is sent to the juvenile court, the justice system or the court is not to be blamed. Getting caught is possibly the greatest thing that can happen to children who take on illegal actions.
